They say a picture is worth a thousand words so when I got these great photos from Dale Van Aken of New Hope, Pennsylvania I had to hear the whole story. Dale discovered he had a leaking vent pipe when he found water stains on the ceiling of an upstairs room. "I had a little leak situation, but I thought I took care of it years ago." It turns out that when the roofing contractor had come out and replaced several pipe boots a few years ago they hadn't replaced all the boots on his home. Now one of the two older vent boots had failed causing another leak in his roof.
Dale discovered the Perma-Boot312 when he was online reading a forum for contractors trying "to find out how long a traditional boot would last." Dale has owned his own home for more than 30 years and wasn't happy with how often he would have to replace his vent boots using a traditional pipe boot. "I don't want to be messing around with a leaking vent pipe. You wouldn't believe the quote I got to replace 2 pipe boots." I was shocked when he told me the estimate he got from a contractor was $800, most of which is labor costs.
So he chose the Perma-Boot312 instead of a traditional boot repair, because as he explained it was "kind of an obvious thing. [The Perma-Boot312] is simple to put on and they look good on the roof. The white PVC pipe was ugly!" The best part is that with the Perma-Boot312 he won't have to worry about another boot repair until it's time to get a new roof. He bought the brown Perma-Boot312 to go with the dark panels on his home and even though "the color was more brown than I expected, from the ground it looks good." Instead of paying $800 Dale and his friend Brad installed the Perma-Boot312 themselves. Dale explains "the pictures were from going up 3 stories on a 10/12 pitch roof", but the repair was simple enough to be done entirely from the ladder.
Dale was happy to have another option instead of going with a design which "hasn't changed in the 30 years I have been a homeowner, it's one of those little nuisances." Now it's a problem he won't ever have to deal with again. Special thanks to Dale for taking the time to speak with me about the Perma-Boot312 and sending us these awesome pictures from his installation!
